Cardwell and its surrounding waterways, offshore reefs and islands are renowned for fishing and crabbing. Three boat ramps are located nearby and for those without their own boat, hire boats are available at Port Hinchinbrook.

More serious anglers can enter the fishing tournaments conducted throughout the year for a chance to win some great prizes. You don't have to own a boat or go offshore to catch fish at Cardwell. The beach is only metres from the Cardwell Beachcomber where you can cast a line or a net and catch dinner or just have fun trying! Good catches of grunter and barra are often caught from the Cardwell jetty, just a short stroll up the beach.
