Cardwell's first jetty was built in 1872 when the town was to be the major port servicing northern Queensland. Today the current jetty is the focal point of town and is a popular vantage point to view dugongs, turtles and other marine and bird life.
The jetty is also a great fishing location and huge fish are often caught, particularly at night on the right tide.
